Officer Ira Haas: Reflections on a 25 Year Career with the Fort Lee Police Department

April 17, 2015 7:30 am - 8:30 am
Carolyn Sobering has served as chairperson of Community of Friends in Action (CoFiA) for the past 3 years.  CoFiA began as a loosely organized grass roots group of people concerned about the plight of the undocumented workers - or day laborers as they are sometimes called - who gathered on the streets of Palisades Park hoping for a job opportunities.  The majority of men are from Guatemala.
Carolyn will speak about how CoFiA is working for better immigration policy and is able to provide information about social services, facilitate employment opportunities, develop leadership training and support, and foster positive communication between the workers and the communities in which they live and work. We also provide occupational safety and health training with no fee, ESL classes, wage theft recovery assistance, and a workers’ link program that connects homeowners and small businesses with workers who need casual or occasional work.
Carolyn has traveled to Guatemala 3 times to work with projects building schools in small mountainous villages.  She has partnered with a completed school for children with special needs in San Jilotepeque, Guatemala and helps to provide supplies for the 2 classrooms.
