Justin Ziegler: Development Work on the African ContinentMarch 7, 2017 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Justin is the Chief of Staff at Andela, a fast-growing startup based in New York, Lagos, and Nairobi. Andela selects the top 1% of tech talent from the largest pool of untapped talent in the world—the African continent. Dubbed the startup that is harder to get into than Harvard by CNN, Andela extends engineering teams with top software engineering talent. Andela is backed by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (Mark & Priscilla’s Personal Fund), Spark Capital, Google Ventures, Omidyar Network, and others.
Justin is a recent graduate of Princeton University, where he graduated magna cum laude from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs with a concentration in African Affairs and Development. Elected President of the Princeton Class of 2016 during his sophomore, junior and senior years, he planned class events and commencement activities. He also founded the Class of 2016 Community Service Project, Community House Big Sibs, which oversees the mentoring of elementary school students in Princeton. At commencement, he received the W. Sanderson Detwiler 1903 Prize, which is given to the senior who, in the judgment of the student's classmates, has done the most for the class. His numerous Princeton activities are anchored in a passion for community service. Justin co-founded Princeton TruckFest, a charity fundraiser combatting food insecurity, raising $77,000 in its first three years.
Justin’s work experience has helped shape his goals. As Coordinator for the Princeton-in-Washington Program, he held 40 events with alumni and students, designed to connect students around service careers. He was also a Congressional Intern for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, where he helped plan the African Leader Summit that was attended by 38 heads of state—the most on Capitol Hill in the nation’s history.
Justin was born and raised in Leonia, New Jersey in the same house his grandfather, David Boyd, grew up in. Son of two life-long Leonians, Susan Boyd and Bill Ziegler. He attended Leonia High School where he was captain and MVP of the baseball team and graduated as his class valedictorian. He was active in Scouting and is an Eagle Scout in Leonia’s Troop 71.
Justin enjoys sports, especially baseball and basketball, and is still super bummed that the Golden State Warriors did not win the NBA Finals. He studied Swahili in college and enjoys learning languages.
