Meeting with Guest Speaker Mary ChaoMay 21, 2021 8:00 am - 9:00 am
We have a special speaker this Friday morning, in honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Mary Chao, who covers the Asian community in North Jersey for The Record, will give a presentation called Finding Their Voice: The Asian American Community in New Jersey. Bergen County is home to one of the largest enclaves of Asian Americans, with more than 16 percent of its residents identifying as Asian American. The recent wave of violent crimes against Asian Americans being scapegoated for the pandemic that started in Wuhan, China, has sparked an outcry from the community. Long known as the ‘model minority,” many Asian Americans are speaking out for the first time, taking to the street to protest. Ms. Chao will discuss the history and demographics of Asian immigration to the area, and focus on the current issues and how they are being addressed.
Our meeting will be held via Zoom. If you would like to join us, please contact Sally Seymour at firstname.lastname@example.org to request an invite including your contact information and how you heard about the event.
