Philip Wilson: World Eradication of Polio – The Power of Vaccines

February 18, 2022 7:30 am - 8:30 am

You may not be aware of International Rotary's role in the fight to eradicate polio. Since 1979, Rotary's key humanitarian priority has been to permanently end polio worldwide. They spearheaded the campaign at a time when there were over 1,000 polio cases a day in 125 countries, paralyzing and even killing children, and thanks to Rotary's efforts, cases have been reduced by 99.9%. In 2007, Rotary partnered with The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which has donated billions of dollars to the effort called End Polio Now—Make History Today.

Philip Wilson will discuss the history and the continuing reduction of the number of cases of polio in the world, and the work of the global network which today has succeeded in eradicating polio from all but a small part of the world. He will outline his own story of contracting polio as a child and the resulting paralysis. It's a vital story and important for our time, especially given the current mixed attitudes toward vaccines.
