Kenya Hot Lunches
A cause near and dear to the heart of our club is helping to feed hungry children. To that end, the Rotary Club of The Palisades is not only driving the Weekend Snack Pack Program that serves children at risk of hunger at the Anna C. Scott and George Washington Elementary schools in Leonia and Edgewater, respectively, but is also funding the provision of hot, nutritious lunches to the students at the Kishermoruak-Obama Primary School (the “K-School”) on the Maasai Mara Reserve in Kenya.
In 2008, the Ridgewood Noontime Rotary Club established ties with the K-School and made a commitment to help enhance the school’s educational mission. Some of the Ridgewood Club’s project include capital improvements; completing a well to serve the school, as well as 1,000 villagers, with running water; and erecting a fence around the school to keep animals—domestic and wild—from freely roaming the grounds and destroying the school garden that supplies vegetables for the students’ consumption.
In 2010, the Ridgewood Club invited our club to partner with them by contributing to the costs of providing the school lunches—typically rice and beans—for 330 students, 5 days a week, at a cost of 10¢ per child, or $600 per month. Now, nearly 5 years later, there are 445 students and the costs have risen to about $740.00 per month. Our club is honored to continue to support this effort through various fundraising activities.
